The Commerce Department‘s temporary number two official has outlined his agency’s long-term goal to help businesses work with startups and make decisions by using open government data.
Bruce Andrews, acting deputy commerce secretary, said this weekthat his department is working with other agencies and private sector partners on ways to share and distributie that data to stakeholders.
“The best way to do that is to listen to suggestions from those already using our data – and to get the private sector’s guidance on where the federal government can unlock the greatest value in our data sets,” Andrews said.
Many government leaders such as Andrews have made data management a priority item for their agencies and GovCon firms are helping develop new methods and tools to handle the data explosion.
Matt Warren, president of the justice and homeland security sector at Agilex, described the transformative impacts and potential implications of growing data volumes for law enforcement and other agencies in an interview with ExecutiveBiz.
“Big data represents both an opportunity and challenge for law enforcement. It can deliver amazing new insight, but agencies also risk being overwhelmed by the deluge of data available today.”
Mark Jones, head of CA Technologies‘ public sector healthcare vertical, gave our staff a glimpse into what users will need to have as data analysis evolves.
“There’s going to be more need to understand within data sets or within different applications what data is really important to me and what data is less important so I can get that sort of visibility.”
