A top technology official at the Pentagon said this week that a new cloud computing policy for the U.S. military could be released by the end of the month.
Terry Halvorsen, acting chief information officer at the Defense Department, also described the Defense Information Systems Agency’s role in cloud acquisitions, where DISA would evaluate DoD’s information technology systems for compliance with security and cloud policy as the military pushes to obtain commercial cloud tools.
Military agencies would purchase cloud technologies and related services through their own contract offices under the new policy, Halvorsen said.
“That’s simply because we can go faster. We’ve got to go faster, and that just means I’ve got to increase the number of people who can do the contracting.”
Costs of cloud and other new technologies will also factor into the new policy as the military plans to hone on mobile devices, data access and the Joint Information Environment.
