Weekly Roundup for 2/6/14 – 2/13/14

From Jim Garrettson, Executive Mosaic President & Founder

The Department of Homeland Security is seeking to shore up public sector cyber defenses and extend its partnership with the private sector by advocating that each use a similar standard for network security.

“We are suggesting some protocols that DHS has already built and some sectors have started to adopt that will send information about the security of the traffic that it’s carrying,” said Phyllis Schneck, deputy undersecretary for cybersecurity at DHS’ National Protections and Programs Directorate.

Scheck served as McAfee’s global public sector CTO before heading to DHS and overviewed the global cyber picture in this interview with Executive Mosaic.

Work to build up cyber defenses can often extend to other portions of an enterprise like critical infrastructure, according to Eric Eifert, ManTech’s cyber defense solutions SVP and GM.

“A contract might not be just for cyber security, but have that as one of the tasks,” Eifert said.

The Potomac Officers Club will bring together industry and government leaders to discuss how to best defend and support domestic critical infrastructure at the “Federal Critical Infrastructure” Summit on March 19.

Government leaders Dr. Harvey Davis, NSA director of installations and logistics, and Dr. Timothy Unruh, director of the Energy Department‘s Federal Energy Management Program, will lend their insights to the GovCon executive audience with many more speakers being lined up.

Former DHS Cybersecurity Deputy Undersecretary Mark Weatherford and Ed Goetz, VP and chief security officer at Constellation Energy, will also offer their perspectives on the state of domestic infrastructure.

POC is also excited to host CACI Executive Chairman and iconic figure Jack London for a March 27 special event, where he will sign copies of his new book “Character: The Ultimate Success Factor.”

All proceeds from that event will go to CAUSE, a nonprofit organization providing rehabilitation support to wounded warriors.
