From Jim Garrettson, Executive Mosaic President & Founder

Two federal civilian leaders highlighted this week how the government wants to make cybersecurity a higher priority throughout the acquisition process.

Emile Monette, senior adviser for cybersecurity at GSA’s mission assurance office, said NIST holds the authority to approve that plan, which would mandate cybersecurity requirements for certain federal contracts.

Joe Jarzombek, DHS’ software and supply chain assurance director, said the government is focusing on the supply chain aspects of cybersecurity.

GovCon firms have also made cybersecurity a focal point of their businesses and have made moves to bolster their portfolios and place themselves to grow.

Tim Reardon, VP and GM of defense and intelligence solutions at Lockheed Martin, told ExecutiveBiz that Lockheed in continuing its investment in cybersecurity centers around the world to promote collaboration with government agencies.

“In all cases, the idea is to work with our customers to advance state‑of‑the‑art cyber research,” Reardon said.

Tony Cole, FireEye global government CTO and VP, pointed to information sharing between agencies and businesses as one way to further bolster the public sector’s cyber defensive posture.

“We need to share indicators of compromise with governments, and they need to share them with industry as well to ensure that a threat they see is automatically rolled into commercial products,” he said.
