April 3 – April 9 2015

A Note From Our President & Founder Jim Garrettson

The U.S. Army has made public a roadmap to bring cloud computing products and services into its operations and previewed some of the next steps it will take to further the process.
In an April 2 blog post, Deputy Army CIO Gary Wang said the branch will also publish a new policy guidance for commercial cloud services providers “within the coming weeks.”
Wang said that guidance will focus on rationalization, acquisition requirements and how the Army should use off-premise cloud service providers.
He also highlighted network capacity and security as priorities for the coming migration, as well work to prepare and transition applications into a cloud environment.
“The potential vulnerabilities of and impacts to expeditionary operations in highly contested and inevitably degraded communication environments must be carefully and continuously assessed, then weighed against the advantages of adopting cloud technologies.”
Pat Tracey, vice president of homeland security and defense for HP Enterprise Services, told ExecutiveBiz in March the decisions that surround cloud migrations go beyond just the product an agency plans to adopt.
“Moving into a cloud implies things about what you are willing to do to adapt your business processes to the cloud environment,” Tracey said.
“It involves thinking about security in a cloud environment that is probably different from a way that you have thought about it in a private dedicated traditional environment.”
The current state of cloud computing in the federal government and what could be in store going forward will be the item of discussion at the Potomac Officers Club’s “FedRAMP Forum” May 14 in Falls Church, Va.
Matt Goodrich, who leads the FedRAMP program for the General Services Administration, will address the breakfast event for GovCon and government executives.
Claudio Belloli, who serves as FedRAMP’s cybersecurity program manager, will also offer his insight and perspective at the forum.
