Who Is Aaron Weis?
Aaron Weis, a five-time Wash100 Award winner, is a technology expert who has held senior leadership roles across public and private sectors. He currently serves as chief information officer at Boeing Defense, Space and Security, a role he has held since June 2025.
Before joining Boeing, he led as managing director for Google Public Sector for over two years.
His private sector career also includes positions at Axalta Coating Systems, Sensata Technologies, Tyco International and Siemens.
From 2019 to 2023, Weis was CIO for the Department of the Navy. In the role, he provided oversight of DON’s technology portfolio, which is estimated to be worth $11 billion annually.
How Is Aaron Weis Wielding His Tech Sector Position to Support Service Members?
When Weis rejoined the private sector after a stint at DON, he used his position to advocate for warfighters.
He said at a 2024 event, as reported by DefenseScoop, that he would leverage his position at Google Public Sector to shape the company’s AI development program for the benefit of the U.S. armed forces.
“Google has been a leader in AI for a long time,” he told the crowd, adding that the company “has the ability to move at speed.” He also encouraged leaders to use AI based on the Department of Defense’s ethical standards.
It was also under his leadership that Google partnered with the nonprofit organization Expiration Term of Service Sponsorship Program to launch the Onward Ops portal, a cloud platform that provides resources to enable servicemembers to transition to civilian life.
“In the digital and data-driven age we live in, we have the opportunity to create more accessible, intelligent and virtual pathways to ensure service members have a successful journey back to civilian life,” Weis said at the time.
Aaron Weis as a Champion for Stronger Cybersecurity
In 2019, FedScoop reported that the Department of the Navy received a review that found that competitors and adversaries may have exploited information systems and stolen national security intellectual property.
That review led to the creation of the CIO role, and Weis had the monumental task of improving DON’s cybersecurity posture.
One of his first achievements as CIO was the release of the DON Information Security Vision, which detailed the department’s plan to adopt emerging technologies to defend its network from cyberthreats.
He also led efforts to accelerate the department’s cloud transformation to maintain an edge over adversaries.
It was his work strengthening DON’s cybersecurity that got Weis his first Wash100 Award.
“Best known for his skills of strategy and cross-functional team leadership, Navy CIO Aaron Weis has distinguished himself for his ability to lead both technology and cybersecurity capabilities across both the Navy and Marine Corps,” Jim Garrettson, CEO of Executive Mosaic and founder of the Wash100 Award, said about Weis’ win.
He has also, for a long time, advocated for the Pentagon and the government to move away from a compliance-based approach to cybersecurity and to adopt zero trust.
“Zero trust is asking every second of every day, ‘Do we trust the user? Do we trust the device? Do we trust the network? Do we trust the data that’s about to be looked at? And do we trust the application?” Weis said in an interview with Executive Mosaic in 2023. “And looking at the intersection of all five of those variables over and over and over again is a way to have real-time, ongoing cybersecurity.”
What Is the 4×24 Leadership Program?
The 4×24 Leadership Program is an invitation-only program created by GovCon media and events organization Executive Mosaic to give senior government contracting leaders a forum for deeper engagement than traditional networking events allow.
The program divides members into groups organized by specialty, such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, healthcare, space and business development. Each 4×24 group has 24 members to facilitate meaningful discussions and long-term professional relationships.
A core feature of 4×24 is direct engagement with senior government officials through quarterly dinners to provide members with insight into shifting federal priorities and new initiatives.
