An information technology giant and a medical IT firm announced this week that they have joined forces to pursue a contract to update the Defense Department’s systems for managing electronic health records.
Dr. Keith Salzman, chief medical information officer for IBM’s U.S. federal business, will lead the team of “Big Blue” and Wisconsin-headquartered Epic to offer the military a joint technology platform for the DoD Healthcare Management Systems Modernization Program.
The awardee or winning team for the program will work to modernize information technology systems the department uses to manage health records for both active service members and their families.
“Together we understand that we must step forward and bring our best to improve health outcomes for those who proudly serve our nation,” said Andy Maner, a managing partner for IBM’s U.S. federal arm.
Healthcare IT has become an important growth market for many GovCon firms as agencies such as DoD have realigned their spending priorities to address health needs for their constituents.
ManTech International, for instance, gained access to the VA’s T4 technology services contract vehicle through the company’s purchase of 7Delta.
George Pedersen, ManTech CEO, said his company aims to have a “presence across the entire spectrum of federal healthcare, including the VA, DoD and Health and Human Services.”
Todd Stottlemyer, Acentia chief executive, said his company’s buy of IT services firm BCA earlier this year brought a prime position on CDC’s CIMS contract vehicle to Acentia.
