The intimate access afforded by these interviews provides insight as to how companies are acquiring new business, what the future holds and the personal side of corporate leaders.
This past week, ExecutiveBiz published a spotlight with Dr. Ray O. Johnson, Lockheed Martin EVP and chief technology officer.
The Air Force veteran and former SAIC executive discussed a number of topics in his Q&A with the GovCon website including procurement trends of the federal government, the importance of STEM education for America’s youth and some of his new responsibilities as part of an executive realignment at the Bethesda, Md. based firm.
“During the space program, many people entered the field of engineering and science to support the Apollo program as part of our national security; those people are now retiring. So we are concerned about the number of young people who are needed to replace these important technology positions,” Johnson said.
When ExecutiveBiz asked the CTO about procurement and how it relates to the current budget environment, he indicated the company had planned for a down budget.
“We look ahead and we also look to the current. I think the key is to have a balanced portfolio. History has shown that in times of economic downturns or defense drawdowns, making investments in future technologies is important,” said Johnson.
ExecutiveBiz also asked about his past in the Air Force, specifically lessons that he had taken away from the experience.
“The single most important thing that serving in the military teaches you is that the mission comes first,” he said.
