ExecutiveGov unveiled a number of timely and important news items this week geared toward the government and government contracting executive.
Two of the most vital stories the website published included an article about regulatory spending under sequestration and another about large savings from IT in the federal government.
In the piece about IT savings, U.S. Chief Information Officer Steven VanRoekel told U.S. House of Representitives members that the federal government has saved $1.37 billion from IT budgets at agencies in the past year.
VanRoekel integrated the PortfolioStat program, meant to consolidate phone and internet contracts, with another government initiative meant to reduce data center spending.
According to the article, the initiatives helped the DoD reach $189 million in savings, #164 million at Homeland Security and $102 million at NASA.

A recent study by George Washington University and Washington University in St. Louis shows that the federal government’s regulatory spending remains fairly unchanged despite across-the-board budget cuts.
The report analyzes the spending habits of 75 departments and found about a 1 percent hike in 2012 and 2013.
According to the report, recently passed measures are the major drivers of the increases, including $633 miilion for the FDA in 2013 and $693 million coming in 2014.
