Government News: Mark Warner Asks GAO to Review Gov't Shutdown, U.S. Extends Alliance w/ New Zealand

Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., has called on the Government Accountability Office to examine the fiscal impact of the recently concluded partial government shutdown.
“The best way to prevent another unnecessary shutdown is to better understand how this irresponsible action fully impacts our economy,” Warner said in his letter to the agency.
Warner asked GAO Comptroller General Gene Dodaro in the Oct. 24 letter to provide his office with full assessment report of the shutdown’s impact on the economy, federal workforce, agency operations and services, state and local governments, federal contractors, private-sector companies and revenues.

U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and New Zealand Defense Minister Jonathan Coleman announced an expanded U.S.-New Zealand cooperation during a joint press conference Monday at the Pentagon.
The new agreement calls on both nations to resume bilateral defense policy talks after almost three decades, according to the report.
“Near-term steps include military-to-military talks next month in Honolulu, New Zealand’s deployment of a frigate to the multinational antipiracy coalition in the Gulf of Aden, and the United States’ upcoming participation in what will be New Zealand’s largest ever multinational and interagency exercise,” Hagel said, according to AFPS.
