The U.S. Navy and Northrop Grumman demonstrated this week that the summer months are anything but restful in the partnership between government and industry as the pair combined to execute an aviation milestone.
“Salty Dog 502,” a Northrop-built unmanned aircraft that flies autonomously rather than through remote piloting, became the first such aircraft to land on an aircraft carrier, touching down on the USS George H.W. Bush near Norfolk, Va. on Wednesday.
“It is not often you get a chance to see the future, but that is what we got to see today,” Navy Secretary Ray Mabus said after the landing.
While the uncertain budget environment has helped define the contracting industry this year, unmanned aircraft and C4ISR programs are poised to grow as federal priorities over many years to come.
