The federal government continues to partner with Universities to improve energy usage and protect networks from cyberattacks.
The National Security Agency is investing $8 million in cybersecurity research initiatives to create test labratories of four universities.
The University of Maryland, North Carolina State University, Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Illinois will each receive grants worth up to $2.5 million for the first year of research.
The subjects of computer science, mathematics, behavioral science, economics and physics will be used to create trusted systems in the labs.

In a similar vein, the U.S. Navy just signed an agreement with Purdue University to conduct alternative energy projects with the aim of halving the service branch’s energy usage by 2020.
“Teaming up with research centers is an important part of maintaining the strength of the partnership between our Navy and the American people,” said Ray Mabus, U.S. Secretary of the Navy.
“Energy reform must inform and shape every decision we make during research, development and procurement of our systems. With a consolidated Navy and Marine Corps effort, we will reduce our reliance on fossil fuels, reduce our tactical and strategic vulnerabilities, increase our combat capability, and make the Department of the Navy a government leader in energy reform,” Mabus added.
