The Defense Department released details this week on how UAVs fit into its proposed budget for FY 2015.
The military’s $2.45 billion unmanned aircraft spending outline includes plans to purchase more UAVs from several of the country’s largest defense contractors and to continue work on a UAV that can be launched from a carrier.
As the Pentagon and other agencies continue to highlight their technology priorities for the future, GovCon firms are partnering and innovating to stay ahead of the curve.
Red Hat, for example, announced this week that its Enterprise Linux computing platform will be available to agencies and other systems integrators through an Amazon Web Services cloud computing system.
“On AWS GovCloud (US), agencies can use Red Hat Enterprise Linux on demand, paying for only what they use, when they need it,” said Paul Smith, public sector VP and GM at Red Hat.
A Level 3–Northrop Grumman team also announced it is working to help the Air Force improve how it trains pilots by bringing together networked simulation and training systems.
“The Level 3 network is incorporated into the distributed training solutions Northrop Grumman provides to the U.S. Air Force,” said Ed Morche, SVP of East region enterprise and government markets for Level 3.

Steve Harris Appointed Dell Federal VP, GM
Steve Harris has taken on the vice president and general manager roles at Dell Federal — the Round Rock, Texas-based company’s federal government arm.
The 16-year company sales veteran most recently led the company’s business in the education, state and local government markets and has also overseen sales to public healthcare customers.
He will be in charge of the company’s federal channel business in his new role and work with George Newstrom, VP and GM of Dell Services Federal Government.
Harris will report to Bill Rodrigues, VP and GM of Dell’s North American commercial business.
Marillyn Hewson: Lockheed to Buy Industrial Defender for Commercial Cyber Push
Lockheed Martin will purchase cybersecurity products and services provider Industrial Defender for an undisclosed sum.
Industrial Defender builds cyber tools for customers that run control systems in the oil and gas, utility and chemical sectors.
“Industrial Defender’s expertise in cyber security for critical infrastructure is a natural extension of our commercial cyber security business,” saidMarillyn Hewson, Lockheed chairman, president and CEO.
The companies expect to close the deal within 30 days, pending customary closing conditions.
Tony Smeraglinolo: Engility Subsidiary Enters New Phase of Philippines Environmental Program
An Engility Corp. subsidiary has been awarded a potential five-year contract to help USAID formulate strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the Philippines.
IRG, USAID and the Philippines’ government are working to build up the country’s resilience against current and future effects of climate change under the B-LEADERS program.
“This contract also builds upon the work we completed for the (CEnergy) program during which our team laid the groundwork for this new phase of environmental protection and sustainment in the Philippines,” said Tony Smeraglinolo, Engility president and CEO.
Leidos to Help Naval Health Research Center Investigate Warfighter Stress; Steve Comber Comments
Leidos and the Naval Health Research Center will examine how stress affects members of the U.S. military under a potential five-year contract.
The NHRC wants to gain a better understanding of how mental disorders could affect warfighters’ health and performance, as well as effects on healthcare costs.
“Finding ways to improve the health and wellness of our military personnel and their families is important to the nation, which means it’s important to Leidos,” said Steve Comber, Leidos health group president.
Leidos will take in up to $7.3 million over one base year and four option years.
Jonathan Goldman, USIS Vet, Joins FCi Federal as Chief Growth Officer; Sharon Virts Comments
Jonathan Goldman has been appointed to the newly-created role of chief growth officer at professional services contractor FCi Federal.
He led efforts to win $1 billion in new business in previous VP roles at USIS and KeyPoint and also held an executive role at Labat Anderson.
Sharon Virts, FCi Federal founder and CEO, said Goldman will work to grow the company into new markets.
Goldman will manage the company’s growth strategy and operations.
