Government contractors and their federal agency partners trained their eyes this week on Capitol Hill to watch the movement of two key pieces of legislation related to the fiscal year 2015 budget.
One of those bills — a $1.1 trillion package to fund the government in FY 2015 — took one step forward Tuesday when the top appropriators in both chambers of Congress signed off on the package ahead of the current continuing resolution’s Thursday expiration.
As of the time of this publication, however, the deal was reportedly held up by some lawmakerson both sides of the aisle due to provisions related to regulations on the financial services industry and language that rolls back some campaign finance restrictions.
Lawmakers were set to vote on the omnibus bill today but could pass a short-term funding measure to avoid a government shutdown and get more time to consider the omnibus.
The other piece of legislation — the FY 2015 defense authorization bill — also saw some progress Friday when the House approved the measure by a 300-119 vote.
Under this measure, the Defense Department would get $495.9 billion in base funds and $63.7 billion for the war budget, with the Energy Department slated to receive $17.5 billion for its national security programs.
The Senate was scheduled to tackle the defense bill first before the omnibus.
